Dharma.direct's membership provides a range of benefits.

For starters, it allows you to post comments, e.g. to discuss a detail of an article or to help others find a reference they were seeking. It also allows you to see comments restricted to members (most comments are! Such a feature allows people, who do not wish to claim to the world they're Buddhist —maybe because their environment would likely be hostile, maybe because they simply don't wish employers or clients to be influenced by such a label— to enjoy a ‘safe place’ to discuss the Dharma). Once a member, you benefit from all the privacy-related features of the site.

The authors of articles featured in the magazine are kindly requested to engage with the community, and you can ‘tag’ them in comments to seek further explanations or guidance in relation to their article (you're also free to express disagreement with their views, but they've no obligation to answer that; Dharma.direct aims to be a place for transmission, for sharing, for learning… not for ad hominem attacks nor for further splits in the saṅgha). Membership gives you direct access to senior practitioners and teachers, in the idea of supportive “admirable friends” (kalyāṇa-mittatā).

Finally, membership allows you to ethically take responsibility for the support you get from the platform, as well as the featured content, by providing reciprocal support, based on your means. There's no fixed price, or compulsory subscription to the magazine. Nonetheless, from the earliest days of Buddhism, the best opportunities to hear the Dharma were created by inviting the renunciants for a meal, or at least by giving alms. Short of supporting the saṅgha, one might just see it walk through, towards the next village! The Dharma ‘should’ be given freely, and yet the community ‘should’ also be supported by each and every one of its members, based on each one's capacity. This is the (very traditional) economic model of Dharma.direct, based on dāna, and membership allows you to fully participate in this endeavour of mutual support (cf. Iti 107).
